HARRY POTTER SPOILER!! My thoughts on potter…

Posted in harry potter on July 27, 2007 by Phil Alcorn

Please, if you are reading, or havent read and are planning to read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, do not read this post. If you have read it, or simply don’t care, read on… (highlight the text with your mouse to read it…)

Ok… so the most pressing issue’s should be dealt with first I feel… my theories and how they panned out 🙂

1. Snape being good – One thing I have never ever doubted is Snape being one of the good guys. I was kinda convinced about his love for Lily Evans/Potter, but wasn’t sure… However, I had always been convinced that when Dumbledore pleaded with Snape on top of the tower, saying ‘Severus, please…’ he was in fact begging Snape to continue with a prearranged plan to kill him. The look of hatred and disgust in Snapes face can be explained by reading Harry’s reaction to forcing Dumbledore to drink the potion in an earlier chapter. Harry is said to have been ‘repulsed’ by what he was doing, ‘hating himself’. I am happy to see I was right about that one…

2. Dumbledore not being dead – Ok, I had a pile of theories about this one. For one, we are told a couple of times, very clearly, in the previous books that the unforgiveable curses only work if you really mean them… And seeing as my theory of Snape being good led in my mind to it being impossible for him to really mean Dumbledore to die, I assumed the curse would not have worked properly. This was backed up by more thoughts of when Moody talked about the unforgiveable curses to Harry’s class. He had said that they could all have pointed their wands toward him and shouted ‘Avada Kedavra’ and he wouldn’t have had so much as a nosebleed. The fact that the curse, improperly cast, could cause a nosebleed led me to believe that there was some sort of physical force involved with an improperly cast killing curse. This couples with the fact that Dumbledore was sent flying off the top of the tower by some kind of force (seeing as every other killing curse thus far seems to have caused the victims to collapse dead, not send them flying), backing up my thoughts that this was an improperly cast killing curse, perhaps gravely injuring, but not killing, Dumbledore.
Next, there is the matter of horcruxes… in my desperation for Dumbledore to be alive, I started thinking about ways in which Dumbledore could be dead, but not dead… horcruxes seemed an obvious answer. I mean, Dumbledore seemed to know an awful lot about them, isn’t it possible he could have made one in his youth? Perhaps after the defeat of Grindlewald? Could Falkes have been a horcrux? Dumbledore seemed to jump to the idea very quickly that Tom would use an animal as a horcrux… What if the potion that Dumbledore was forced to drink, which caused him such distress, was some kind of liquefied regret or pain or feelings resulting from Tom’s murders? Surely that would have been enough to rend his soul in two, wouldn’t it? After all, Dumbledore told Draco on top of the tower that he had indeed gone out for a drink, and come back… after a fashion… did ‘after a fashion’ mean he was somehow changed? And if Falkes was his horcrux, it would kinda explain the pheonix Harry saw at Dumbledore’s ‘cremation’…
Anyway, enough of my theories… he WAS really dead after all… and Grindlewald wasn’t killed in the famous duel, merely defeated… and seemingly (as we saw when Tom killed Gregorovich) sometimes there IS a force associated with the killing curse…

3. Aberforth Dumbledore – I had thought that he would turn out to be the barman of the Hogs head, and would be the character JK had said she would introduce more fully in the last book. When Harry first met the barman, Harry was supposed to have vaguely recognised him, and his description was similar to Dumbledore… and Harry also thought the Hog’s head smelled of goats, and as Dumbledore told us in a previous book, his brother Aberforth was convicted of doing magical things (can’t remember what) to goats earlier in life… Plus, with Dumbledore ‘seemingly’ dead, it seemed clear that details of his past, including his family, would come out in this book… Happily enough, I found myself to be right here too…

4. Harry is a horcrux – I had firmly believed (until someone told me JK had debunked the theory, then i had my doubts) that Harry was a horcrux, due to the lightning scar on his forehead, and would therefore have to die in order to totally undo Tom’s evil reign. I was pleased to discover I was (kinda) right here too…

5. The deaths… – I had been convinced, until recently (but seeing as I had been convinced for so long, I’ll make them my theory) that the two main deaths in this book would be (apart from Harry, of course) Hermione and Hagrid. Hermione, as I had believed that the trio could not possibly make it unscathed, and Ron would take Hermione’s death a LOT harder than Hermione would take Ron’s, and Hagrid because he was Harry’s first link to the wizarding world, a character loved by (nearly) all, and a kind of father/big brother figure to Harry… I didn’t actually have much else to go on apart from that, pretty weak theory… hence why I was wrong I think…

6. Harry and Ginny would end up together, as would Hermione and Ron… (despite the deaths I had predicted… I believed they would get together before they died obviously)… come on guys, it just had to happen… I was happy to see I was right again…

And now, to talk about the ACTUAL deaths… well, the ones I cared about anyway…

The first one caught me off guard… Hedwig?? I hated JK for that… it was a low blow… it did upset me, I’ll admit…
Moody – I didnt care anywhere near as much as the order seemed to… yea, it was a blow, but I was never that fond of the guy if I’m honest…
Dobby – come on JK, have a heart!! There was NO NEED for Dobby’s demise… that one REALLY stung, possibly the death that affected me most int he whole book… ESPECIALLY the funeral… call me a girl, I don’t care, that burial was very hard to read…
Fred – Also made me hate JK… what are you playing at?? I almost didnt believe it when I read it, it was just so wrong! You can’t split up the twins, you CAN’T! NOR can you kill a weasley (well, maybe Percy), they’re too… too… y’kno… yea, Fred’s death was as hard on me as Dobby’s…
Snape – Although I was sorry to see him go, knowing that he was a good guy really… it didn’t bother me TOO much…
Lupin and Tonks – These came as a complete shock, so much so that I don’t think I really felt them as much… they just came across as random, completely unnecessary deaths… come on, JK dear, wise up…

Ok, I realise this hasn’t really been a great post about my opinion of the book… but I’m tired and I have work in the morning, so I’m gonna leave it there and go to bed… suffice it to say, in summing up, that I liked it…

Oh, and Connor, yea, the 3 ‘b’ words as you say are in the children’s edition too…

I thought I’d join the endless ranks of bloggers who are posting about the latest Potter book… but seeing as I haven’t actually read it yet, all I can say is, I’m off to read my new copy now… (Bought my own… couldn’t be bothered waiting for my sister to finish hers!! She’s such a slow reader…)

Was ‘visioning’ tonight. Or to explain that better, I was at a meeting tonight to try and formulate the vision for the coming year of CU. We have done this already of course, at summer planning (when the committee all went to the north coast together to plan the year). The only thing was, although we formulated the vision, we never actually got it into a coherent statement!! So we met tonight (5 of us) to do so, the five of us we had agreed on at summer planning.

It was a long process, as I had kinda expected. But I didn’t mind in the least. It seems that most things we do or decide as a committee involve a long process, but I find that kinda encouraging. To me, it shows we’re really trying hard to do the best job we can… hilariously enough, we (the 5 of us) are actually meeting again next tuesday because we didnt quite get finished…

We also had a rather interesting chat about the next Harry Potter book, due out on Friday night (midnight, so technically Saturday morning…) – I have quite a few theories of my own, but the beyond hogwarts site has some very interesting theories of its own… I wonder if they’ll turn out to be true…

I’m fairly tired now…
